Product Information

Penciclovir is a purine acyclic nucleoside analogue with potent antiviral activity. The compound has been used in Human.Herpesvirus 6 studies and its activity assessed through flow cytometry. Herpes simplex virus-1 studies indicate that Penciclovir induces apoptosis without causing much genotoxicity.

Usage

Penciclovir is a guanine analogue antiviral drug used for the treatment of various herpesvirus infections. It is a nucleoside analogue which exhibits low toxicity and good selectivity. Because penciclovir is absorbed poorly when given orally (by mouth) it is used more as a topical treatment, and is the active ingredient in the cold sore medications. Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability.
Penciclovir is mainly used clinically for oral or facial herpes simplex and genital herpes.
Nucleoside antiviral drugs have an inhibitory effect on type I and type II herpes simplex virus in vitro. In virus-infected cells, viral thymidine kinase phosphorylates the product to penciclovir monophosphate, and then the cell Kinase converts penciclovir monophosphate into penciclovir triphosphate. In vitro experiments show that penciclovir triphosphate and deoxyguanosine triphosphate competitively inhibit herpes simplex virus polymerase, thereby selectively inhibiting herpes simplex virus DNA synthesis and inhibition
